2. Implementation's characteristics

ReclaimNaija is a system of civic monitoring of elections in Nigeria. It is one of many implementations based on the open-source USHAHIDI software.

The ReclaimNaija platform makes it possible to report incidents and irregularities observed during elections in Nigeria. A report can be submitted by: filling a special form and providing a picture, an audio/video recording, a comment, link to the Web source, a specific location; by sending a tweet with the hashtag/s #reclaimnaija or #NigeriaDecides; by calling or sending an e-mail; or by sending a text/voice message. The service users have a constant access to statistics of reported irregularities visualized in the form of an interactive map. The site also features a chronological (as of the day of entering into the system) register of all reports. The category filter for the submitted reports is based on 6 categories.

The USHAHIDI system has three major roles: sending information, visualization of the sent data in the form of an interactive map, and giving notifications/alarms based on the received reports.

Thanks to the USHAHIDI, information provided through the website (form), e-mails, Twitter, text messages, rss/xml/csv, or a mobile application (Android, iOS) is automatically added to the map. The system also allows for contacting the persons who have sent information, with them remaining anonymous.
