2. Implementation's characteristics
Application The evolution of European Union Legislation is an example of the use of open public data. The presented solution is a graphical representation of the development of European legislation from 1951 to 2011. The application shows the quantitative increase in legal acts at annual intervals.
The legislative activity of the institutions of the European Union is represented by a pie chart as well as a timeline. The presentation reflects the division of legal acts into different sectors/European policies. The application also provides information on the number of specific types of the EU acts – including issued, regulations, decisions and other legal acts. Users, when clicking on colourful ‘circles’ representing particular sectors, are redirected to next slides showing a detailed layout of the legal acts in thematic subcategories for a given sector.
By default, when a website of the implementation loads, an animated version of the application launches. Users, using the menu to the bottom of the page, can stop the animation, and using the timeline therein, can select a selected year.
The application was developed and shared with users in 23 languages. The creators published an API code for implementing the European Union legislation on – http://api.epdb.eu/. The website contains a step-by-step explanation on how to use the application, as well as how and what databases were used when creating the deployment.
