2. Implementation's characteristics

The Adopt a Hydrant activity is an example of how the Web and Internet applications may be used for allowing initiatives based on the cooperation of Boston’s authorities and the city’s inhabitants in the form of civic voluntary activities. The idea behind the project is the “adoption” of hydrants, i.e. a citizen’s declaration that they will help the city in keeping the urban space clean and orderly (e.g. clearing of snow, mud and stones, reporting faults) through the “adoption” of the hydrants located within the city.

Thanks to the Internet application each registered and logged in user of the service can, according to his/her will, declare the readiness to provide help in the management of a given hydrant. All of the hydrants have been marked on a special map (integrated to Google Maps). They come in two colours: red (those that don’t form part of the programme yet) or green (those that already have their conservator. After clicking on the chosen object, the user can give it a name. Each hydrant forming part of the programme is shown on the map along with its protector’s username. Each user can at any time resign from their mission or change the hydrant he/she wants to take care of.

The project is not integrated to any social networking portal. However, it uses the Google Maps location system.
